Julie, thank you so much for the wonderful website. How many thousands of hours it must have taken to construct. I too read Desiree when I was very young (12 or 13).And like you, It made an indelible impression on me. I've reread it many times. I never dreamed a website like this would exist (But then why wouldn't it?). By way of thanks, if you haven't already read it, please read Kristin Lavransdatter by Sigrid Undset. It's set in medieval Norway and won the nobel prize for lit. in 1920?21? I promise you, you will love it.

I'm just now beginning to trace my family tree, but if anyone would like to email me about it and share information, feel free. I havent seen the movie yet but I borrowed the book from my Aunt and kept it for a year, reading it several times. Absolutely facinating!

I also read the book at the age of 12--just when I started to study French. I am now a French teacher. I think the book is somewhat responsible for my interest in the language. It is nice to think that others loved this book as much as I did -- and still do. I reread it just last year.

EXCELLENT page! My interest in Desiree was piqued when I caught the last 10-15 minutes or so of the 1954 movie. And then, a few months later, I found a copy of the original book in a used bookstore. Needless to say, I have fallen in love with the story. Who would have thought a commoner could enthrall an emperor and found a dynasty? It's like a real-life fairy tale. Amazing. Can't wait to see the rest of the movie!

I also found my copy of "Desiree" on my grandmother's bookshelf and she allowed me to appropriate it. I've never seen the movie (I just can't picture Marlon Brando as Napoleon) but have read the book at least once a year since I first read it when I was 14. I can most definitely trace my interests in French history, particularly the Napoleonic era, and my desire to live in Paris back to Selinko's incredible story.

When I found Desiree on the bookshelf in my basement, it was just a dustcovered old hardback that had been passed down from my grandmother to my mom. I didn't know just how much the book would influence my life until I opened it and began to read. Like so many others who have signed this guestbook, I felt somehow connected to the real Desiree through the story. Little did I know that years later I would find that it is quite possible that I am related to Desiree through my great-great grandfather. The picture of Desiree that you have on this site even looks like one of my aunts. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for this site; it actually does her justice, unlike the movie. Thank you.

I can't believe that some other folks are as nuts as I am about the book. I've just returned from visiting Paris (where in Versailles I saw the picture of Bernadotte in person) and also got a print of Napoleon's coronation from the Louvre, hoping to find the Bernadottes in it. I read this as a teen, and it has influenced me quite a bit. While in Paris this time, I wished I had brought my copy of the book, and now that I'm back, I'm reading it again and enjoying it thoroughly. When I worked in a college library, I skimmed Laure Junot's diaries. I was disappointed (but not surprised) at the love affairs of Bernadotte and Desiree, but it seems like that was the time period and how folks behaved. Still - what a romantic couple. And what a book.

I didn't actually believe she was real until a few years later; I don't think I'll watch the movie, as I can see the whole story and the characters when I close my eyes, so lasting was the book's impression, and movies rarely do justice to great novels. A delightful Website. Like many here, I first read DESIREE in high school, and was charmed. I found my copy while wandering around Switzerland, and old and battered as it is, when my daughter wanted to try a good historical novel a couple years ago, I gave it to her. She sneaked it along to her boarding school for rereading! We both waited patiently for AMC to replay the movie, so we could tape it. Though Brando makes an interesting Bonaparte, I think it's high time for a better movie to be made from this book that has meant so much to so many people across generations and cultures. Thank you so much for the website. When my mother was trying to find a name for me, a friend of hers checked the book "Desiree" out of the library. She showed it to my mother and that is how I got my name, Desiree Suzanne, named, of course, after the main character and her sister. My mother's friend kept the book and eventually gave it to my mother. I was born in 1962 and I read the book when I was about 12 or 13. I sat down to read it and wound up reading it all in one day. I named my first daughter after my mother, but when I started having trouble coming up with a name for my second daughter, it suddenly dawned on me that it would be great to name her out of the same book that I had been named from. There are not a lot of girl names in the book. I didn't like Eugenie or Bernadine, or Rose, so my second daughter is named Clary. I feel too that the book sparked my life-long interest in history. Thanks again for a wonderful resource.

Wow it is almost 4:30 am though I should be sleeping, I just had to research some on Desiree. About 2 mos ago after asking my mom what happened to one certain wonderful book I had read of hers many years ago, probably when I was only 12-"Desiree" (I was born in 1960) She forgot what had happened to it. I was in persuit of getting together a nice collection of classics to read, from used book stores as I just love reading from a copy long ago printed (maybe beacuse I read so many of mom's books that were printed way back when!) anyways I entered this one little place, I forget what book I was originally hunting for but I had not been in the store but a few minutes and my eyes caught something on the very top shelf. I definately needed a step stool to reach it. It appeared to be the very same edition of my mom's copy of Desiree!!!! A black binder with faint gold embossing for the lettering. I can't even believe I could have spotted it given the faded lettering and the dim lighting of the store! I just thought you'd enjoy my little wonderful discovery. By the way. The initial impression I get of Napoleon reminds me some of my husband where he states to Desiree of his destiny for greatness. MY husband has VERY humbily expressed those same thoughts to me. I think he is somewhat afraid of what it all intails plus how does one explain that without being misunderstood as arrogant or haughty which he is definately NOT! Also my dearest and myself have so long struggled with defeat after defeat "from meeting up with and becoming involved with the WRONG contacts" as written in Desiree when Napoleon is arrested. HMMMMMM me thinks there just may be something to think about concerning the destiny of my precious husband. Kinda parallels what I am now reading. I think I am going to really enjoy rereading Desiree as I really cannot even recall it being I am now almost 40. To many years have passed since the first reading. Plus what the heck could a 12 year old grasp? These types of books are my favorite to read. Historical fiction! Of course my last book the child from the sea by elizabeth goudge, which I could not even put down it was such a great love and tragic love story but when I researched THE FACTS of the characters I was really disappointed! I leave you with that-its still a great read check it out 1

First of all I would like to say thank you for the web site. I too read Desiree for the first time in school, where I wasn't much of a student. Somehow this book sparked my interest in history and led me to do well in all subjects. I majored in Elementary Ed. & History and am now an Elementary school teacher. How amazing is it that by simply reading such an informative and interesting book about history, it can change a person's life. This book which led to other books put a spark in me that inspired my interest in education and history forever.

I first read Desiree about 2 years ago, not 2 months go by that I don't read it. But there are many questions i have..how did she die? Did her husband and son die of natural causes? What was her relationship with N. Bonaparte? Where can I get a copy of the book "A Queen of Napoleon's Court"?? Thank you very much, and goodbye, Marifer.

I was blessed with the name of Desiree in 1963. My oldest sister read the book and sent a letter from overseas to our mother requesting that they name the baby Desiree because she loved the book and fell in love with the person Desiree Clary. I read the book last summer and to feel a tie to Desiree as many others do. Thank you for your site!

And I have an M.A. in history from Helsinki University... How maný of you have shaken hands with a real Swedish King?... I save here at my home as a treasure the menu of a Dinner served in His Majesty's honour in 1974... In Helsinki. I could write a whole letter but perhaps I must stop now...

I read the book "Desiree" and enjoyed it quite a bit. At first it seemed like a work of fiction - one woman being romantically involved with two very famous men - but it was all true! I enjoy your site, as it has given me more information in which I was very much interested.

If you come to southern Germany you can meet Desiree's great-great-great???-son Graf Lennart Bernadotte at the Isle of Mainau, which is in the Bodensee (on the border to Austria and Swizerland).

I am a spanish scientist (mathematical physicist) 43 years old. I must confess that I have never had any special interest in Literature and History. In particular I had never heard about Desiree until recently. It all began a few months ago, in January 2000, when I got a japanese treatment (Reiki) for my allergies. It turns out that some gifted Reiki therapists can see images of your past lives when they put their hands on some parts of your head (at least this is the way they interpret such images). He saw several interesting "reincarnations" of mine, so interesting that he decided to investigate further using the technique of Astral Projection following my "soul" to the past consulting what they call the Akhashic Anals. As you may imagine, one of my past lives was Desiree (otherwise I wouldn't be sharing this experience with you). The therapist described me how Napoleon and I had met for the first time, later becoming lovers (it was clear for him that we were both virgin when we "did it" the first time, he was very shy and I had to push him a lot). Two or three years after he had to go to Paris and then he fell in love with Josephine and he dropped me. The therapist's opinion is that he was very unexperienced with women, since he had only been with one woman, me, who was quite adolescent (and provincial). Josephine was very mature and experienced and she knew how to deal with men. So, he fell in her trap. This was a very bad move for him for two reasons. First because Josephine was very ambitious and many of Napoleon's historical blunders had a lot to do with her enormous ambition. Desiree, on the contrary was a very good person in the human sense. If she had been his wife Napoleon would have behaved in a different manner himself. Secondly, the therapist said, as Napoleon's love for Josephine was decreasing, his love for Desiree was increasing. Desiree was by far the most important woman in his heart and he loved her until he died. The therapist also explained to me that I got married with one of the Napoleon's generals (I ignored all about Desiree) and years later he became king of Sweden. The therapist also told me that, in general, lovers come together in several reincarnations and he had investigated our case. He found that Napoleon and I had been together before in two previous past lives. The first one was around 2800 years ago in Israel-Lebanon. We had a very deep sentimental relation for several years, although due to the circumstances we couldn't get married. The second time was about 2300 years ago in Greece-Macedonie. He was Alexander the Great (no wonder that the historicians find amazing similitudes between Napoleon and Alexander the Great, they were the same person!). I was a slave that Alexander had saved from the horror of the mines. I was only 9 or 10 years old when this happened and Alexander was about 12 or 13. He was visiting the mines with his father, the king of Macedonie Filipo, when they saw me working in the mine. Alexander felt so sorry that he decided to take me for his personal service. So I became the all-purpose servant of Alexander. My name (the one Alexander gave me) was Leptina. I was his first lover and we were lovers until he died at 33. He gave me the freedom when in Asia we found my people (the people who spoke my mother language). It turned out that I had been kidnapped and sold as slave when I was very little, this was a common procedure on that days. I refused to separate from Alexander because I loved him very deeply (despite his various wifes and lovers). After he died I got married with one of his generals. Well, this is what the Reiki therapist "saw" in his investigations about Napoleon and Desiree. I don't remember anything at all of my past lives, neither I want to remember anything, I have enough with dealing with my present, very busy life. This means that I am not going to try any "regression" techniques with hypnotherapy in order to remember any of my past lives. Do I believe the therapist? Well, I don't know if reincarnation really exist but certainly I have an extremely good opinion of him (in addition the major allergies that I had had for many years disappeared after a few Reiki sessions). To me this story is entertaining (sorry but still I am not interested in History as many of you are), for this reason I wanted to share it with you. Anyone interested in verifying it should learn Astral Travel and follow themselves the soul of Desiree to the past, to find Leptina with Alexander, and to the present to find me working on my research and with my husband (who is not an incarnation of Napoleon). So, interested people, this is your challenge!.

its been four years since i started frequenting this page, i figured it was time to write something. after making my 1997 entry at Amazon.com (under siolfor@aol.com) i was contacted with this link by email. i've been addicted ever since to it. when i first read Desiree when i was eight, i never imagined it would cause me to fall in love with napoleon himself. that love has gained me, at (currently) 21 to have gained a PH.d in history. (that's a labour of love, for any of you who have actually gone through the doctoral process) julie, i thank you truly for this site. i visit it everytime i watch Desiree, as i am now and learn more each time. though, i must say.. if i had my hands on some directorial funds, i would love to make a new Desiree, more true to Selinko's book. but, who would make a better napoleon than marlon brando?... i would love to hear from anyone interested in history... interested in napoleon... interested in Desiree..

This book also was the most influential book of my life. My father brought it home in 1976, when I was 11 years old. I read it again and again, every year until I was 17, and then a few times after that. I lent it to my sister, who was 9 years younger than me, when she was about 11 or 12, she too loved it and read it yearly, until giving it back to me. My copy had the last few pages of the first section ripped out, so I found it in a library at one point, and photocopied the missing pages. I went on to study French in high school and read many biographies on Napoleon in College. I would love to travel to France one day to see all the places in the book.

I was suprised to hear your history about how you became interested in Désirée because it sounds like my history! I was 14 and found it in my mothers bookcase. Now I am 31 and it is still the best book I ever red. I still read it from time to time and I have been in Paris lots of time to see things and places connected to Désirée. I gave my daughter the name Josephine because of Napoleons wife and the only reason that she wasn´t called Désirée is that it is not a normally used name in Denmark.

Delighted to find your site. Thank you for creating it. I read Desiree when it was first published in America, and it has always been a special favorite of mine. I still have my original copy with its dust jacket. I also own a paperback copy, and recently bought another hardbound copy at a book sale which also has its dust jacket. It has been withdrawn from a school library, and I thought that was a shame. I am so pleased to read the guestbook entries and learn of all those who love the book and continue to discover it. I always have been interested in Desiree's story. My ancestory is half-Norwegian and half-Danish (all of my grandparents immigrated). I became an academic librarian and work in a university library. Last year we purchased a book on Swedish palaces, and it contains color photographs of Desiree's bedroom. And there is an issue of Life magazine in which there is a painting of the Swedish royal family and includes Desiree. Over the years I have always looked for information about Desiree and Bernadotte in books on Napoleon, for example, in one on Napoleon's marshalls. And I have found articles on Bernadotte and Desiree in journals as well. I remember vividly my father reading from a Sunday newspaper in 1954 that letters from Napoleon to Desiree had been found in the Swedish Royal Archives. Desiree had taken them with her to Sweden. I have since searched for other accounts of this information but have not been successful. Since some signers several are the 1954 color Cinemascope 20th Century Fox film, let me metioned how wonderful it is. Jean Simmons has always been my favorite actress, and I was delighted when she was cast as Desiree. Jean Simmons always gives excellent performances and is considered to be one of the most beautiful, charming, graceful, and talented women to ever have graced the screen. The film was nominated for an academy awards for Best color Costume Design and for Best color Art Decoration and Set Decoration. (Just last week on e-bay, some of the costumes Jean Simmons wore in Desiree were being auctioned at fabulous prices. For example, the robe Desiree when Napoleon returned from his retreat from Moscow had a first bid price of $1,500.00. The hat Jean Simmons wore in the final scene of the film had a starting price of $600.00. Michael Rennie portrayed Bernadotte, Merle Oberon portrayed Jospehine, Cameron Mitchell portrayed Napoleon's brother Joseph, Elizabeth Sellers portrayed Desiree's sister, and Marlon Brando portrayed Napoleon. The film premiered in San Francisco on September 16, 1954. I remember a film column at the time said that Jean Simmons stole the picture from Marlon Brando because of her beauty. And AMC's introduction to the film spoke of how the critics described Jean Simmons' beauty as ravishing. Incidentally, Jean Simmons is the only actress to have been Brando's leading lady in two films. The next film they each made was "Guys and Dolls." One of the themes from the music for the film became very popular and was recorded by several artists and was on the hit parade. The name for this particular theme was called "We Meet Again, the Song from Desiree." It had lyrics for the pop version, and I have a copy of the sheet music. I always dreamed of finding a music box which played this theme. In the film Desiree teaches Napoleon to waltz (at his command) after she has left Josephine's bedroom, paying her a sympathetic visit the evening after the divorce from Napoleon. They waltz to the melody played on a music box. Finally, here is the commentary on the film on page 194 of Baird Searles' book EPIC: HISTORY ON THE BIG SCREEN. c. 1990: "A radically different look at Napoleon's life, albeit one at second hand, is given by DESIREE. Desiree ("desired") indeed: she is a provincial shoopkeeper's daughter who meets and loves Napoleon when he is a junior officer posted in the French boondocks. Her sister marries Napoleon's brother Joseph, but the family draws the line at Napoleon--he doesn't have much of a future, and besides, "one Bonaparte in the family is enough." Mevertheless, her destiny is tied to Napoleon's and though thick, thin, and Josephine, their paths entwine, though she eventually marries one of Napoleon's most trusted generals, Count Bernadotte. When the count is elected by the Swedes to become their crown prince, voila!--Desiree is the Queen of Sweden. She returns to France just in time for Napoleon's downfall, and on the terrace of of Malmaison, Josephine's home, persuades him to surrender rather than kill himself. At least DESIREE doesn't have her stowing away on the ship to St. Helena. This curious variation on history would be of the utmost inanity if it weren't for the leading players. Marlon Brando and Jean simmons, who somehow contrive to play it like drawing room comedy, and between them give the picture its charming playfulness. Brando is marvelous as Napoleon, the only one in film with the streak of humor that so many historical anecdotes record. Simmons, who seems to be able to salvage any role she attempts, makes Desiree undeniably desirable, and charming as well. Even the gorgeous but usually humorless Merle Oberon seems infected, and her Josephine shares the general good humor while regarding Desiree throughout the film with justifiable suspicion. Everyone looks splended in Napoleonic uniforms and Empire gowns, and there is a knockout re-creation of Napoleon's coronation, reproducing the painting by Jean-Louis David. The final encounter between the two principals achieves an almost surrealist grandeur--the terrace at Malmaison (in reality a comparatively modest estate) sports acres of white marble, set against a sky of searing Maxfiled Parrish blue. DESIREE is hardly history, but it's a lot of fun." I still have some of the advertisements used to promote the film. One of the captions is "Before Josephine there was Desiree. And some say there was always Desiree..." I close, offering homage to the real Desiree, to the wonderful book, and to the charming, beautiful film and its stars. Gary
